Hi. I want to fully tile a bathroom wall that is currently half tiled with very thin ceramic tiles. they are solid so I want to tile over them . Does anyone know a diy filler/plaster product that I can put on with a float so that the current top row of tiles will blend in better when tiled over.I am told there is a product on the market now but don't know its brand name. Thanks

Hi, You can apply a coat of " Bonding Plaster " to level the wall out. But also when it has dried out apply by brush or roller a generous coating of PVA to seal the new plaster before you tile on it.

Thanks for your answer gasman.Do I need to prepare the wall before I apply the bonding plaster i.e. with PVA and is it a good idea to use PVA on the tiles i'm tiling over as well.
I have read a new theory, but can't remember where, that applying PVA to walls prior to tiling means you are actually tiling onto the PVA and not the wall.

We used a considerable amount of PVA during refurb of a property this year but I did wonder about using it prior to tiling.

So, I used it in the shower room but not the bathroom. Now I just have to wait and see if/when the tiles come off and in which room.
If you do not use PVA then the plaster just like a sponge will suck out all the moisture from the tile adhesive and it will therefore not adhere properly and could result in the tiles coming loose or falling off. To tile on tiles simply rake a bit of grout out and scratch the surface of the old tiles with a tile cutter or a masonary drill bit, to create a better key for the new tile adhesive and tiles.
