Is it better to use nails or screws to put up battening. I am putting the battening up to put some tounge and groove along the wall (approx 7 foot high by 10ft accross)

Depends what you are fixing the battens to. If its timber, nails will do. If its brick/masonary, you will probably find screwing easier.
I presume you are putting the tongue & groove on an inside wall. If so you are better to fix the battening to the wall using rawl plugs and screws. The type of rawl plug depends on the type of internal wall. If it is plastered over breeze blocks then a normal rawl plug should suffice. If it is plaster boarded then there is a cavity between the plaster board and the brick so you will need special rawl plugs that open up behind the plaster board as the screws are tightened. Both of these rawl plugs can be easily purchased from any D.I.Y. store. Hope this helps.
screws every time, if you want it to stay up!
