septic tanks and toilet roll

we have just had to rod our septic tank ( not nice) and it was stuck up with loo roll.

can anyone tell me the best and worst loo roll to use, we tend to have the nice soft velvety stuff, but i have the feeling that was wrong!!

If you have a 'real' fire you could do it the continental way - toilet paper into bin for burning, not down the loo.

The in-laws used to have problems with their septic tank, but eventually worked out that having the washing machine and dishwasher on at the same time seemed to be what was causing it! Also, don't use any of those wet toilet tissues you can get.

The cheapest loo paper is best as it breaks down easier , we have a porta loo on a boat and have to use the cheap one for this reason

I have a real fire Ethel and a septic tank! The thought of used loo paper in a bin in the bathroom just makes me cringe!! However, you are right, that's what they do in a lot of places on the continent.

We had a problem with the drains and had to rod them and were told that Charmin was the devils work with drains!

thanks all for your answers, we dont have a real fire but it me cringe too about using it on a fire.
cant afford to not use the loo roll we have so wil be extra careful about how much and keep a closer eye on the tank till its finished.

so its off to the supermarket then, to buy the not so soft stuff, the kids will moan but I'm not spending another morning rodding drains.

I have stayed in a hotel (somewhere abroad and I can't think where!) where all loo paper had to be placed in a bin which was emptied each day by the maids. It made me feel quite horrible thinking of having to do this job. It felt so unnatural not disposing of it down the loo. Yuk!

Have 2 cess pits which need emptying about every 3-4y unless there's a monsoon. Our blockage was caused by a broken brick in the pipe......how it got there? We use cheap tesco paper - no probs.

Put the used paper in bin lined and burn all.

Am burning my old shoes/clothes/plastic bottles/wrappings/weeds etc for warmth. The fire-place is the bin & when filled, lit. Great cheap heat. Soon empty the house!

Careful with that plastic though, it's toxic.

I burn a lot of things on our woodburner, but never plastic.

Our first ever experience of putting the loo paper in a bin was on our first Greek holiday. We felt so embarrassed about putting the loo paper in the bin we lined the bin with one of our own plastic bags to make the chamber maid's job less unpleasant. She must have appreciated the tip - every day after that, she lined the bin with a small plastic bag. Only thing is, now we are more environmentally friendly plastic isn't quite the thing .............

I know what you mean LoftyLottie, it's like that in most of Greece there drain pipes are only 2" and the loo roll blocks up dead easy....
