Which colours to paint which wall? Advice please!

The kichen of my OH's house is painted a (vile!) purple colour (courtesy of his ex).
I have finally got hime to agree that it needs repainting (hurray!).
We have chosen a few different coffee type tones; golden, cream brown, light mocha etc, nothing too dark.
The question is which colours would be better where? Should the darker tones be on the open walls with least on them, and the windows, or are they better on the smaller areas between the floor mounted cabinets and the wall mounted cupboards.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. It is a nearly square room, probably 8ft x 7ft. It is a north facing room, the slightly longer wall is the ouside wall with the window.

Lighter tones on wall with windows and opposite wall to reflect light. Darker on others.
