Garden lights are powered by Ni-Cd AA 600mAh 1.2v batteries re-charged by a tiny solar panel. I think I have sussed out that I could use batteries with a higher mAh. Am I correct? Also can these batteries be placed in a conventional battery charger when there is insufficient sunshine for the solar panel to top them up?

Yes to both
There wouldn't be unuff light in the day even in the middle of summer to charge the higher rated ones - the manufacturer put the 600mah ones in for a reason. So u will end up charging them to topthem up.
