At this time of year you can normally buy last year's seed & potting compost at good discounts. Are the contents still as good as they were - or have the fertilisers in some way deteriorated?

Likewise, if seeds have been unopened and have not been exposed to extremes of temperatures, particularly heat, they will probably have a germination rate as good as new packetes. Even packets many years old will still have some seeds that will germinate.
