I suggest you go to your local library and take a few out to decide which format suits you best before buying.

I wouldn't be without my RHS encyclopedias but Reader's Digest do some very good ones too. If you have charity shops take a look in there, you'll often find lots of gardening books in really good condition for a mere fraction of what you'll pay for new ones. Once you start buying you won't stop! :o)
Try Dr. D.G. Hessayon books:- there are several on plants, veg, house plants etc and they are brilliant - clear, straightforward, lots of illustrations.
