why are some solid commodities sold in liquid measures (ie some garden supplies in litres & shrimps in pints )?

the garden supplies, like potting soil ? - probably to aid help you calculate how much to buy, if you had a flower bed 1M x 0.5M x 0.1M deep you would obviosly need 50 litres of soil. you wouldnt know how many kg or pound to buy !. As for shrimps, i doubt they want to stand counting them into a bag.
