Complaints about British Gas Sale Technique
6 Answers
In October 2008 we invited British Gas to give us a quotation for a new boiler. On making the appointment I warned the call center that I would not tolerate "any hard sell techniques".
In due course the gas man came. He immediately launched into his sales patter, treating my wife an I as if we were idiots. I warned the guy not to continue in this way but it made no difference. In the end I asked him to leave our home.
I then, via British Gas website, used their complaints procedure. I have followed this procedure on a couple of occasions but no joy.
They have sent email acknowledgments to my emails but nothing further. I have looked for phone numbers and a postal address but cannot find any details. Any information on contacting them would be welcome.

I'm not sure what you'd complain about, that he tried hard to sell you a boiler? I would imagine his employer would be upset if he didn't.
However, if you simply didn't like his sales technique then I guess you just don't buy the product from him and choose another supplier.

Yes I agree with your comments up to a point. I should say that we are both over 70 years young and we felt that there was a definite tendency towards intimidation, unfortunately some sales people do try this when they are dealing with more mature people. When this sales person took the line he did we began to feel very uncomfortable by is approach, even when I asked him to leave he ignored me and I had to repeat it telling him to go.
I had a neighbor, not in possession of all her faculties living on her own, who was persuaded by a British Gas sale person to sign an agreement. When a friend discovered this it took a long time to get British Gas to consider canceling it, which they did eventually.

I know exactly what you mean! Some years ago now, and we are elderly too - we had the same problem with a Zenith rep for window replacement. We told hgim we wanted time to think and discuss and so on. We had to ask him to go. He continued to sit in his chair and carry on trying to get us to sign there and then. We threatened to call the police and it wasn't until my husband dialled them that he left!
i'm a heating engineer not salesman and i know exactly where your coming from. when i'm looking to buy something, no matter what it is i want the salesperson to help, advise and guide me into what products are on offer and what the best options are for my needs. then if i find that the salesperson has been helpful, polite, patient and comes up with a competitive price then i will buy from him. if someone tries the hard sell then i'm out of the showroom like a shot!
