how can I compare the light output from an led lightbulb when compared to a standard filament type bulb.

not seen any led bulbs for sale yet and i believe there going to be very expensive compared to tungsten and the useless low energy lights we have at moment
They are on sale, they are incredibly expensive, presumably because the developers want to recoup their development cost.
As a rough indicator they are 10x more efficient than incandescent types, so a 5W LED will give out as much light as a 50W downlighter.
However people report that the 'colour' of the light is very different and also they do not seem as bright.
Not worth considering yet - wait 2 more years - IMHO.
I have 15 of these LED lamps in my kitchen downlighters, they are not as bright as a 50 Watt halogen but instead of being 50 watts they are only 2.5 watts each so i'm saving a fortune in electric. These can be bought at a decent electrical wholsaler for about �3.99 each and the light output is equivalent to about 20 watts....
I forgot to say there are loads on Ebay...
