vegetable oil or sunflower oil!!!
More house fires are caused by chip fryers than any other item.

Chips can be brought frozen and cooked in the oven.

Do yourself a favour and get rid of the frier.
Read this and see the dangers

http://www.morpethherald.co.uk/news/Fire-chief -warns-of-chip.4956994.jp

Fire chiefs have issued a chip pan warning to Northumberland.
It follows the loss of three lives in the County in the past 12 months as a result of chip pan fires.
More here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_pan

"Chip pans are the most common cause of house fires in the United Kingdom, with around 12,000 chip pan fires every year, with 1,100 chip fires being considered serious.

These fires result in over 4,600 injuries, and 50 deaths per year. British Fire Brigades frequently issue warnings and advice, urging households to switch to a safer means of cooking chips."
I think you will find that all refers to chip pans (Open on the hob) rather than deep fat fryers, which are usually quite safe and have thermostatic regulation.

Sorry to labour the point, but so many fires are caused by chip pans that it just is not worth it.

Particulalry as there are other ways to cook chips.
Ok lukey121 you can put the oil in just don't turn it on!
VHG I suggest you actually READ the article, as it quite clearly states that deep fat fryers, as opposed to chip pans, are safe.
Chip pand are not deep fat fryers - the article says so

As I said.....

Read that article and it quite clearly states how safe fryers are compared to pans. Why you are labouring the point about open pans I don't know.
Deep fat frying is not the most healthy way to cook, but if you have a thermostatically controlled fryer, then it will not overheat, and will be quite safe, I would use sunflower oil personally, but vegetable oil is fine too
Oven chips just don't taste as nice...
You're right cheekychops, they don't taste good! I see nothing wrong with using a fryer to make chips now and then, as long as you don't use it every day
