Building shelves / storage?

I'm doing up my living room, and am looking for some kind of storage for loads of books, cd.s & vinyl.

I keep thinking I should do this myself - ie. build some units rather than a "rack" type shelving arrangement.

Does anyone have any advice on what to have a go at (or where I might find some plans?). I'm not a pro, but would have a go at most things.

It all depends on what type of furniture you like I s'pose. But one of our daughters is into the minimalistic Ikea birch wood type & although I'm not, her furniture looks really nice, along with the shelving units, etc. I've been to Ikea  with her & was quite surprised at some of the options available & at very reasonable prices too!
