Decking
5 Answers
I'm thinking of having a patio constructed with softwood decking. An injured shoulder means I can't attempt it myself.
Before I get quotes, I'd like to know what is an average price, per square metre, for decking to be supplied and fitted? The decking would be laid on flat ground, no slopes or steps to be taken into consideration. If location affects the price, I live in Wiltshire.

We only had it done because we had very uneven ground, with quite a drop when stepping outside our french doors.
I will be honest with you though, it does have to be maintained - my hubby has used decking oil on it to preserve it, at a cost of 36.00 per tin and we needed 3 tins- that came off within 3 months - the end of last we tried decking stain - so far it has only came off a little.
Out of choice I would go with paving.

Yup, I'd go along with DEN53, if you've got a flat area, go with paving - laid properly its less maintenance and longer lasting. A deck is a great solution for a sloping site or an elevated position, eg leading from house and steps down to garden. Depending on prep work, price would be similar to paving - once again as long as its done properly!
Blimey DEN53 I'm only 12 miles down the road and you had to get guys from Barnet!

Hi Lanscaper2 - its always the way is'nt it - wait for one and then 5 come along when you are least expecting it .....
In fact when we moved into our bungalow 3 years ago - you would'nt believe the trouble we had to get a plumber.
My hubby does most DIY but electrics and water he won't touch.
In the end we got recommended to a retired plumber - he was a lovely man, but I became his 'plumbers mate' - I also made him sandwiches, cakes, tea etc - he kept telling me stories of when he plumbed Bob Hoskins bathroom in (he even brought photos !) and he had Princess Diana's sink in his garage. By the end of 7 days, we still had a leak, but I could'nt get him our of the place quick enough - I was suicidal !!!!!!
The decking chaps were piece of cake.
