Floor Covering......

I'm replacing the floor covering in the living room but don't know whether to go for a new carpet (which the dog will blacken within a month) or oak flooring (which my daughter says is noisy and dusty)...........suggestions please?

If you did'nt want carpet - you could try good quality carpet tiles - I say good quality, not the 1.00 ones from B & Q.
If your dog made a mess on one, you could simply lift it up and wash under the tap (the tile that is, not the dog !!!).

awww Craft :)
My old flat had pine, and once it had been professionaly sanded and 5 coats of varnish it looked stunning!!!
I would def. agree with everyone about the oak aswell if sanding down is not an option, shop around on the internet, get samples sent and go for it!!!
I did have a slight problem with one of the rooms we had in the house we're in now... the wood I'd sent for was 18/22 mm thick and I needed 14 mm so there was no 'step'....
Happy floor shopping!!!

As soon as I can afford it I am definitely going to get real oak flooring fitted throughout downstairs,it looks so much nicer than any carpet, there is also the added bonus to anyone with a lung condition like mine that there should be less house dust mites. The incidence of asthma in scandanavian countries is very low because they have mostly wooden flooring in their homes.
Go for hard flooring by all means, but oak can be really tricky. Unless you buy good quality stuff that has been dealt with properly and allowed to dry out properly, you can have all sorts of problems with it expanding/contracting - particularly if the room you are flooring has a minor damp issue or is exposed to lots of sun light.
