How do you turn up an aga?

I have moved into an old house and it has an old aga. It is ok for stews but doesn't seem hot enough for anything else. There is no instruction manual. In my aga cook book it says the heat mark should be about 1/3 but mine is under, more like 1/4. Is there a way to turn it up. I realise that the guage is not a temperature guage but indicates the stored heat but it should surely turn up
There is a guage marked 1 to 5, so which way is hotter? Nothing I've done so far makes a difference.

I used an oil fired Aga for the first time last year, which had 4 different ovens...very hot for roasting, hot for baking, warm for simmering and a cooler one for plate warming etc. Do you only have the one??

It had a mercury filled temperature gauge, and I could adjust the temperature although it probably took about a day for it to change. Maybe you need to wait a bit longer to see if anything happens.

Once at the right level, I didn't touch it until I wanted to turn it off.

It was fun to use last winter, and was a lot easier than I imagined, but can't imagine having to use one in the summer.

There are other brands, which are slightly different, so I hope someone else out there may be more helpful.
