Can I use Azaleas as a formal (trimmed) hedge?

I would like to replace my yew hedge with something more colorful. I like the look of azaleas and mine or evergreen after flowering. Can I plant them in a row and trim into a formal hedge? If so, what are the problems?

I don't think the azalea, which is part of the rhododendron family lends itself to being trimmed. If you think that things can grow under your yew hedge why not consider growing flowering climbers into the hedge, which if chosen well will flower before and after the time that you trim.

camelias would make a lovely hedge and are the first to flower in spring, evergreen. T'would be a shame to trim them to under 4foot.
