i have salt coming out of my wall in the living room is it damp as it does/nt feel wet

Is your house/the wall fairly new?  All bricks have differing amounts of salt content which is slowly released from the bricks for a few months after they are laid.

Could be rising damp. Water rises up from the ground and as it evaporates it leaves the salt that was dissolved in it on the surface of the walls. It is quite possible that it wouldn't feel damp to the touch as most of the moisture would be within the wall.

How about investing in a de-humidifier?

A de-humidifier would help if you had condensation problems, but don't think it would do much for rising damp as the moisture doesn't come from the air.

 

Poppy, do you have condensation on the windows, puddles on the sills, or mould around the windows / doors? This would indicate condensation rather than damp, and is much easier to deal with.

canit be rising damp as it is at the top of the wall the bottom is fine,and no i don/t have condensation

I had this in one of the bedrooms it turned out the chimney needed pointing as the rain was soaking through to the brick work
