My daughter had a new lawn laid last year and it was ok.
It now feels very lumpy underfoot.

When you take a closer look there is compacted soil with no grass but you cannot see any creepy crawlies

any suggestions please.

Ants nest underneath. I suffer from these. And watch the flying ones come out at a certain time of year!
Borrow a roller and flatten-em.
Buy matching Lumpy Garden Furniture.

mjwman. We thought it was ants but the bumps are not raised above the grasss although when you part the grass it is bald. We have scratched the soil but can't see anything.
Are ants nest way below the surface?
It could be moles. I have their runs all over my lawn and veg patch but he/she never seems to surface!!!
Ants burrows go deep like underground train tunnels, but not as deep obviously. They have `nurseries` where they breed their young but no TV rooms.........YET.
If it is ants the bald bit will feel springy underfoot.

No! it is not springy underfoot. It is hard and the bald patches are crusty.
I have ants in my lawn and it doesn't look anything like that.

We will have to see what emerges.
sounds like my crappy grass! you can't walk barefoot on it :o/
