I have a wall covering of "driftwood" which has a varnished finish and I want to paint over it with a gloss finish- being a rough surface, the varnish will be difficult to remove, even with something like Nitromors. Is there a product which can be painted over the varnish as a base primer?

B and Q used to sell a spray that would make paint stick to any clean (ie non greasy) surface. I will see if i can find out way its called, I used it with great success to paint some skanky kitchen wortop side that was next to my cooker

I would burn it off with a blow lamp and then paint it.
