check round the folds in the door rubber, if it looks badly black and gunky you may have to option but to replace the door rubber to get rid of the smell.
I was watching something on tv last week and someone said we shouldnt use our washing machines on low temps it causes bacteria to grow which causes the machine to smell. However have you made sure it isnt in the rubber hose that goes out of the machine.! maybe it is kinked or something.
I had this exact problem with mine and it drove me mad. I would walk in my house and smell it right away. Leaving the door closed made the smell worse and leaving it open to dry made the house smell. There is one product you can buy http://www.ciao.co.uk/Dr_Beckmann_Service_it_W ashing_Machine_Cleaner__6963840 I have only seen this in Sainsburys and some Tescos

But I must warn you if your machine is really bad this will only make it smell nice for a few days. I had to buy a new machine and now use this once a month and keep the door open all the time and wipe round the seal after every wash, so far my machine is perfect. Good luck
It drives me mad too. I have found that there is an area inside the machine that I have to empty ocasionally if I havent had it on maximum spin - there is a litle door near the base which I open and then have to tilt the machine forward for the water that has collected there to run out - YUck it is really nasty stagnant water. Then run the machine on a boil wash and that seems to clear it for a while

Also try leaving the powder draw open as well as the main door - this allows the air to circulate better and I find it works.
We had this problem and tried all the things mentioned above, but our problem was that the machine wasn't getting enough water - we had a massive undergrand leak in our water supply - as a result the water pressure was so low. We also had our shower ruined. Wehave pipe insurance, and after a lot of persuading Severn Trent came out and fixed the leak. We had had several leaks before this. Severn Trent will only repair the bit of pipe that is leaking so it keeps on happening.
