Growing potatoes in a bin

Has any one ever grown potatoes in a tall container, (like an oil drum) I know that you have to keep covering the leaves with additional soil, when they come to the surface. But how does one harvest the potatoes when you have a container full of soil

Tip the bin upside down

The only way you could do that is by tipping the drum or bin over,
I did this some years ago, but I used a black rubble bag,with a few inches of compost in the bottom, and as the plants grew i added more, till the bag was full,
If you want to harvest early, simply slice accross the bottom of the bag and take out the spuds as required.

The reason I stopped using this method was the problem of keeping it watered when you go away, for any length of time.

I never have this trouble in Tesco's fruit and veg aisle.....

No in a bin but have used old tyres and makes harvest much easier.....google permaculture...

we have grown them this year in buckets,planters etc. and they have been fantastic. Easy to tip out, take what you want and put back again to continue growing.
