How do we clean our new wok ?

Whilst in Malaysia we bought a heavy steel wok and when we got it home we washed it in warm soapy water and applied a thin coating of vegetable oil to it. We now want to use it and after wiping it with kitchen towel I noticed a black deposit coming off on the towel. How do you reckon we can clean this wok - it's a good one identical to the sort they have out there on food stalls etc.
