constipated tropical fish

my son has a number of tropical fish. he has been told that one of them is constipated! he has also been advised to remove this one from the tank whilst the others are feeding, returning it afterwards. this treatment was to continue for 7-8 days, by which time the problem should be solved. however, he says he has done his for 2 weeks so far but their has been no sign of the affected fish going to the loo! any ideas please?

For regular fish, like goldfish etc. that don't need a heated tank, you can feed them chopped up frozen peas. The fish eats them, goes for a poo and stops swimming on it's side.

You take the peas out of the freezer, warm them (just pop in a cup of boiling water as you only need a couple of peas), then remove the thin shell of the pea. Cut very small and put in tank.

There may be a similar thing for tropical fish? I'm not sure how different their diets are.

I know this sounds far fetched, but it works. Feel free to Google to prove I have not been taking too much of something I shouldn't!

who determined the fish is constipated? maybe the poor is over-stuffed lol

During the period that the other fish are feeding, and the constipated fish is removed from the tank. Add a small amount of prune juice to the water (it always works for me).

Take care not to add too much juice, or you will kill the fish.

Failing that – take the fish to a fish psychiatrist, there may be under lying psychiatric problems with the fish, not being able to dump while others are watching (I too suffer from this problem).
