I think the answer lies in the fact that gas is `instant on and instant off` whereas electricity takes longer to warm up and isn`t usually switched off before the cooking is finished.  This usually results in electric cookers being `on` for much longer than necessary, resulting in higher costs and under-utilised energy.

Hope that made some sort of sense.

the introduction of electric fan ovens has changed all that. The best most widely regarded combination now is electric oven and gas hob

Agreed............the problem always was with the inefficiency of the electric hob, but I still find that even with a fan-assisted oven a lot of energy is wasted by not switching off early enough.  I usually have to leave the oven door ajar with the fan on and the heat turned right down or else the cabinet [ from a well-known store] starts to overheat.  I suppose that may reduce the central heating bill.

Swings and roundabouts??

I have recently changed from Gas to "Arrow" Electric Oven and Hob. But find the oven Confusing. Is the Inner light not supposed to come when I switch the oven on. The Show light on front do. Plus if I am cooking a joint of meat in this oven on what shelf should it be cooked, the lower or higher shelf near the Grill? Please can you help and have I done right swapping to Electric? Thank you
