eddie, the old prepayment meters box door is broken off and the british gas man came to change it and saw it wasnt safe so he went back, but let me keep it, as it was, and said he isnt allowed to do that coz its a safety hazard, but i would have been without gas, they wont put a door on it for me, as its quite an old one, thanks pea pod, i would prefer it if i could get a door for the existing one, but i cant find one that fits and gas man said it would cost me to get it all removed and a new backplate fitted cox british gas have to do it themselves, i own the property so council are not responsible or are they?

If the box is set into the wall -
Some of the older boxes had little hinges fixed by rivets, when these pull out you need a protector frame rather than just the door. If your old door had two pin hinges which fit up and down into holes in the frame you should be able to get a replacement. One pin is spring loaded so you just squash it and it pops out when in place, try looking at a neighbours to see.
If the whole box is proud of the wall and hinges one the bottom edge then you can definitely just get a new door.
Try your local plumbers merchants but don't forget to measure the opening and if poss take pictures on your phone.
Scotland and Ireland may have other types of boxes to England
