is it just me or does red wine make you sleepy? I can knock back beers and spirits like water but red wine seems to have a different affect, Does this happen to anyone else?
Quote:
"But why does red wine cause drowsiness? In the past, we understood that melatonin, a soporific, was only produced by mammals. Now, a report in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture claims that melatonin is also produced by plants. Italian scientists report that the skin of grapes used to make red wine contains high levels of melatonin. So enjoy your merlot or cabernet sauvignon for relaxation and sleep"
Thanks buenchico this makes a lot of sense and you've solved one of the many riddles in my life! So me and others that feel more sleepy the others when drinking wine must be more sensitive to Melatonin! Oh well back to the beers and spirits for me!
I know someone who steers well clear of red wine because it gives her headaches, but white is OK. I seem to remember reading something that echoes her experience, but can't be certain
