Ducks in our Apple Trees

We live in a house with a river at the end of our property so we have plenty of ducks coming into the garden. We have willow and apple trees and have lately noticed that several ducks are perching on the top branches. It really is an amusing sight!

Has anyone else noticed ducks sitting in trees?

My friend went on holiday to Africa and brought back a photo of some goats up a tree!

Yes, we have had ducks sitting in our trees and moorhens nesting high in the hawthorn hedges!! The babies kept falling out!!!

If they were here in the western U.S., they'd be our tasty but small Wood Ducks... seen here:

They actually have little claws on their feet enabling them to perch in trees. We've several pair that retrun to the same tree near the river for nesting each spring... they should be here in the next few weeks...

Ours are mallards.

My bungalow backs onto a canal and have never seen the Mallards up a tree and there are plenty of trees and ducks available maybe if I put some food on the branches they may climb up there ?

Hi milliezoe! We have lived here for thirteen years but have only noticed the ducks in the trees in the last couple of years. It's extraordinary how they manage to balance with their webbed feet. The willows are pollarded every January so the branches are flatter now than they will be later on in the year.

Now these ducks are called apple ducks due to the fact they feed off Granny Smiths.
During the autumn the ducks turn green and make terrible quacking noises which really get on your pip.

I live near a river and I walk my dogs there almost every day. Their are plenty of ducks but I never noticed them up in the trees.
