Is it possible to change the washer in a constantly dripping cistern which overflows to stop it doing this?

As Dennis says..adjust the ball valve...If it's a brass one, just bend the arm... forcing the float down. This will increase the pressure on the washer, and may seal it.
If it's a plastic valve you wil need to adjust the nut and threaded screw,
Personally I never adjust them, because the inlet valve often wont seat on the new washer...I just replace them...They cost less than a fiver as a rule and it's quicker to change the whole thing than it is to replace a washer..!

If your cistern has a ballcock, there is a washer involved that could have become worn or damaged - quite common. As the ballcock rises, it pushes a plunger that has this washer on the end of it against the water inlet to stop the flow. The washer itself is just a round piece of rubber about 3/8'' in diameter, and is a push fit into the end of the plunger. Most hardware shops should have them in blister packs of three. If you're handy with spanners - no problem, but check you're buying the right sized ones!!

and what if he has the needle valve type? ... This is recognisable by the ALL plastic valve assy. You will need a repair washer/diaphragm kit for that.

Hi all,

Once a ballvalve/cock has been adjusted correctly, i.e. when the cistern was originally fitted, there is no need to adjust it again.

If a cistern constantly drips thereafter, a washer requires replacing. This type of washer depends on what mechanism you have in your cistern.

Unfortunatelyn without knowing this it is impossible to give you a satisfactory answer.
