I think my water meter has been stolen. Has this happened to anyone, and what happened? Did the water company charge to fit a replacement?

How can anyone steal your water meter? as far as I know meters are linked directly to your incoming water pipe as a result you would either be flooded out or your garden would resemble an Olympic swimming pool.

All I can say is that I took off the lid to read the meter and there was nothing there but dirty water.
They can be 3 feet or more down...possibly under the dirty water.
was it there before?? as in.. do you know what one looks like and where it should be??
Sounds to me as if you have a leak, either the meter or the connections to/from it.
Don't be daft .. All the access traps get water in them .. usually above the meter. The meter is still there.
Water meters have a tap on each side....Turn them both off and unscrew the meter and remove from premises....(perhaps scrap value?)

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I did read the meter on a previous occasion so I know what it looks like, and it was right under the lid on that occasion. I suppose I'll just have to wait till the water company come to have a look.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to nick a water meter. Mind you, nowadays you never know. [:o(

Hope the mystery is soon solved for you juliet.
If you still have mains pressure water emerging from the kitchen tap, then the pipe must be continous.
If the meter was completely missing you would be getting LOTS of water coming up around the cover.
Have you spoken to the Water Company ?

Perhaps they took it themselves.
