neglected lawn. thick moss.
5 Answers
can anyone point me in the right direction to find help with a lawn ( 0.1 acre). the lawn has been neglected for years and is now almost completely thick moss. if there is any grass, it's hidden from view. we've removed a lot of the thick straggly hedge which surrounds it, and there is lots more light coming in now., i think the soil is alright., it's just the immensity of the problem that is making me panic a bit. i'd appreciate your comments please. thank you

i started by applying 3 in 1 lawn feed weed and mosskiller. after applying I waited for 3 weeks then raked out all the dead moss. at this point i wished i hadnt started as there was hardly any grass left at all, it was like a bomb site. i bought some new grass seed and scattered it over the whole lawn then sprinkled a light covering of peat based compost over the seed and rolled it down. after about 3 weeks the grass came through and by the end of the summer the lawn looked fab. trouble is it's a lot of hard work every yr as the moss comes back, have to feed, scarify, aerate, top dress. unfortunately my back's not up to it anymore so i'm trying to find a local gardener who can do it for me.

dear heathfield and gucciman,
just came across your very kind and useful answers to my question on 4th april about moss on my " lawn ". haven't started positively yet., it feels just a bit too much to handle by ourselves, but maybe if i divide the garden up into smaller areas and do it that way, i might get somewhere. anyway i wanted to thank you for responding. thank you very much
