noisy neighbours - what would you do
21 Answers
at the endd of last summer some people moved in behind us. last summer their music was playing all day at top volume - thus spoiling it when we tried to sit in the garden to relax. we let it be as thought it may not be the same this summer...but it is! yesterday I had to sit in the garden with earplugs (yes really! ) and even that didnt work. The Q to you all is: would you a) go knock on their door and tell them what a nuisance it is? or b) send a note with my name and house number asking them to turn it down or c)send an anonymous note. We are not intolerant generally but it really looks set to ruin our summer! ps - its only during the day time so i doubt they are breaking any public nuisance noise laws...

I'd go and have a word, but not if they're likely to cause more trouble, or bring out the pitbull! if it's rented you could report them to the landlord/council, but if you own your property and may want to sell one day.. you have to declare any official disputes.
and that's the only thing stopping me from reporting my bloody awful neighbours.

i just feel it is so selfish...they just presume the entire enighbourhood wants to listen to theirmusic at full blast! Grrrr! I don't really know them - and the main reason I haven't knocked on their door is that they might be the sort who'd then do it twice as much and twice as loud to irritate us more....you just don't know. I know that they rent their house and I wonder if I oughta report em to the landlord (it's privately rented and does anyone know who i'd be able to find out the name of who they rent through)
Find out who their Landlord is evedawn and approach him/her first with the problems you are experiencing as they may not be aware of the situation. It might be in their tenancy agreement that they are not to cause nuisance to neighbours etc.
Approach Environmental Health Dept of your Council and tell them of your concerns.

The place next to me was rented by a woman with two dogs that barked all day long. I didn`t know who the landlord was but I remembered the Estate Agent`s letting sign outside before she moved in so I phoned them and told them to tell the landlord. It didn`t make an awful lot of difference. Eventually the neighbour the other side of me got onto the council and they mediated. It was before they tightened up the nuisance laws so they weren`t as effective as they would be now. It might be a house that the council lets and they can deal with it. I`d be tempted to send an annonymous polite note first then take it further if they don`t do anything. Keep a diary of every time it happens as evidence if needed
i was told that if my music can be heard by the neighbours then im causing a problem the council even contacted my landlord regarding my music last summer but guess what it want me lmao it was a house round back of mine. it took me weeks to convince them and prove it i had 2 keep reciepts the lot showing i wasnt home at the random times the person was reporting. i even had 2 keep a note of times i had my music on to see if they matched the perons log who had complained
None of them.
If you do anything anonmously, they will probably know it's you, anyway. If you play your own, and do not enjoy confrontations, that's also a recipe for disaster.
Best way is to take someone that is NOT afraid of confrontations around to have a friendly word.
If they DO rent or lease, AND they get funny with you, just clearly state that you will let the agents/landlord handle it, as you cannot put up with it.
Good luck.

It's a difficult one! I think your best bet would be to go and have a friendly word, ask them to turn the volume down, if they are awkward, then have a word with the Environmental Health Dept. at your local Council Offices, although it's happening during the day they may be able to help, even if it's only to track down the Landlord of the property
