marks on polished wood

any ideas how to remove heat marks/white marks from polished wood

I have been told cigarette ash is good, if you can find some

Use cigarette ash mixed with a little oil (olive oil, cooking oil etc) on the tip of a cloth. Rub it into the mark in a circular motion. It is also possible to buy products such as white ring/mark remover. I don't live in UK any more. I don't remember what they are called but I know most ironmongers sell such products.

If the above methods haven't cured the problem try this:

If the wood is well finished, not bare, mix equal parts baking soda and regualr white, non gel ttothpaste and rub the area with the mixture. Buff for a few minutes, wipe and buff to a shine.  Apply furniture polish.  If this doesn't cure the malady the damage may have penetrated the wood and will require stripping and refinishing...

Our ever so helpful relatives suggested a method for our lovely old antique table which they took it upon themselves to do...
By rubbin walnut (cant rememer if it was shell or innards - shell i suspect) on the patch.
It worked.... but they wrecked the table as the patches are FAR too dark even for oak. This method does stain the surface, but dont bother trying....

Try rubbing with a cork. I'm not sure whether the cork needs heating-up first. Then polish to finish
