I have a pond with 12 assorted fish. The pond all checks out ok, water tests, ok, plant life ok. I have added an a double air stone for extra oxygen and covered the pond with the appropriate net to stop local herons. The water is clear.
Unfortunately we do not see the fish very often and they do not come up for food, they hide on sight of us and only feed when they are alone.
Is this common or can somebody suggest a reason why ?

Is it a new pond? if it is the fish will probablely be "shy" for a while. We feed our fish in the same place in the pond and now when they sense somebody approaching the pond they all appear in the feeding spot. By the way re the herons I've found a plastic one by the side of the pond works well as herons are very terratorial and dont invade each others patch and it looks better then a net.
Hi, this time of year they may not need much feeding, especially if they are small. I've just added two small goldfish into our wildlife pond and they have in the space of a week cleared it of wriggles [mozzie larvae], even if I try to feed them now they ignore it and are growing well so are finding food somewhere.
Do as Paddywak says though and feed a little bit in the same place and they'll soon come if they want it.
