The Tudor rose comes to mind
Use flowers that were around at the time...so no big modern florist blooms include lots of herbs and soft almost 'blown' roses honeysuckle and also add some black grapes... Use a copper or very shiny brass container and possilby stage it with a a ruff, a dagger or an old book with some calligraphy on the open pages or a piece of tapestry or embroidery in progress.. think of a tudor lady and gentleman just leaving the room and setting their things down beside the container..... Staging drapery either deep wine red or a deep green velvet or a dupion silk effect...

Thanks all for your response -I don't seem to automatically receive answers from AB any more and while having a last desperate search for inspiration only just caught up and yes it is for a competition at our local show tomorrow. Your ideas rowanwitch sound excellent I'll see what I can find
