Im looking to re-tile the kitchen, but as Im quite happy with the existing tiles, would it be an option just to re-grout to tidy them up?

(Im not very diy-minded so excuse me if I ask stupid questions!)

Would it be a costly job? Time consuming?

Any advice appreciated

Easy job to do yourself, cheap too
We've painted over ours - I wanted a bright colour and the plain black and white tiles from the previous owner were in good condition. Use tile paint for kitchens, and then if you want ,you can put the odd transfer on top to breakup the plainness (we have).

My sister in law has painted over hers, and re-grout them and they look like new now especially as shes done them in all the modern colours! Go on have a go?

I dont need much encouragement yelenots! Do they need any prep first, or just whack the paint straight on??
We painted over horribly old sea-green bathroom tiles for a quick fix up. They were 4x4 inch PLASTIC and they covered fine. Good enough at the time. I just had that bathroom re done and the contractor laughed at the old-school tile.
She bought some special paint and used masking tape etc. it took her a while to do but they do look nice!

Hi jb, fine thanks - just covered in silk emulsion as I have been painting the spare room ceiling before my sister comes next weekend...

You need to make sure the tiles are clean and grease-free before you start, and apply the paint carefully so it doesn't dribble - but the effect is really good. I did mine about eight years ago and apart from the odd touch-up, they still look good. The transfers do help to break up the plainness - just a few here and there in a geometric design.
