Going to start making my own logs using one of those paper "squeezers" (soak shredded paper, place in machine, press paper into log shape and squeeze water out...leave to dry)

Anyone used one ? any hint and tips ? what about adding a few hickory chips to the paper to make it smell nicer or add something to the water ?

Ta muchly

my mum has one of these and instead of shredding the paper rolls it into a ball and uses it slightly damp on the fire as it burns longer can add some orange /lemon peel
The whole business is tedious, time-consuming, and you will have the compressed results standing about everywhere. I knew an elderly lady who tried all this. Once the novelty wears off .. I bet you find other things to do : )

It's the sort of things i can do on a wet day at work (im a gardener).....i have tons of newspaper and a log maker thingy so i'll just get on with it on a boring day. I can also store them at work too.

thanks for the help though. i suppose, being in a garden, i could add sprigs of rosemary or even eucalyptus to the logs as well as citrus zest and other herbs.

Thanks again

don't burn them damp as it will increase the tar deposits in the chimney. If you keep doing it long enough the tar will soak through the chimney breast and discolour the wall.
Traditional chimneys in the UK are designed to use coal as this gives a hotter and drier exhaust with no condensation as there is almost no hydrogen in coal. Burning dry wood requires an impermeable flu as there is a lot of water produced.
I tried this years ago, when I had a coal fire and someone bought me a machine for a pressie. I found it to be a lot of hard work for little reward - they didn't burn for long at all.

You may feel different though, hammerman - so best of luck with it.
