Telephone outlets

Hope I've chosen the correct department.........My outside telephone line comes in on the ground floor of my home but my office is on the first floor consequently my adsl is not connected to my master outlet and sky inform me that it must be in order to receive my maximum speed. My question is:- can I connect a cable to BT's incoming supply and run it to a new point in my office? If this is not possible then any other suggestions please?

We had an extension cable from our BT inlet at one time, to our office on the floor above, and it worked fine. However I'm with BT Broadband, not sure if that would be significant - but it meant that we could still get an outside phone line using the extension (and we had phones on it too).

As long as the cabling for the upstairs extension is decent quality it will make hardly any difference which socket you plug it into.

If the extension cable is not of decent quality and it is effecting the speed when plugged into the upstairs socket then you have two options.... leave the router upstairs and replace your extension cable with decent quality CAT5 (Ethernet) cable, or plug the router in downstairs and then run a length of CAT5 from the router to the computer.

I had a similar problem. To solve it I simply drilled a hole throught the upstairs office exterior wall and then redirected the incomong telephone line through it and to a new box on the interior wall. Sorted! But you need to be careful and note where in the box the different coloured cables are connected to ensure you get the right configuration.
