Toilet cistern not shutting off

Old one didn't always shut off and got irritating to listen to. New one, just fitted, also doesn't shut off, despite adjustment! It's the non-ball-cock type and, being new, presumably the washer is not the issue. Just bad luck - a faulty new one? Thanks for any tips.

New toilet or new ball cock?

If just a new ball cock possibly the flush valve is leaking (does water continuously leak into the bowel?) or either way it might be too high water pressure just forcing the valve open.

Neither! It's the new adjustable valve (not the type operated by a ball-cock) in the toilet cistern. The water fails to shut off completely, even when the float has "floated" fully up to the top - and even with maximum adjustment in the right direction.

Is it a button operated system Newie? Sometimes the operating cable rests on the valve and stops it from closing. If nothing obvious like that, then it's probably faulty. Very unusual though. These are usually very reliable.

While not familiar with the type of valve you may have, the "non-ball cock" ones here in the U.S. are a cylinder with the float inside a small "cage" like device or moving up a central "post". If yours is like that then you should check for an adjustment "dial" on top or on the side of the device. I've seen both here and one has to adjust the dial to fit the amount of water coming into the cistern. It's failry simple but you have to locate the "dial"...

That's the one I've used many times. I think it must be faulty
Either that, or it has some crud trapped in it somewhere. You can take it apart and clean it out.

Which is the type I was trying to explain... see the long screw threaded part on the side of both pictures? A knob at the top will either lengthen or shorten the amount of distance the float travels. If you turn this and adjust it properly, it should shut off at the proper time.

It adjusts for the differing types of toilets in which it and be installed...

Only dirt/metal particle in the valve or a punctured float will stop Fluidmasters working. Strip and clean.

Sorry to dig this old dog up again ... but guess what ... I got a job this morning and the job sheet said '' Cistern wont shut off''.
When I got there the sisten inlet valave was one of these...

It wouldn'nt stop filling and just ran into the pan making a noise ... day and night.

I tried to adjust it with the spiral rod, this did'nt have any effect.So I turned the water off... and undid the lower blue nut and lifted the whole assembly out leaving the base part of the valve in the cistern.
The large blue nut on top of the valve was then carefully removed ... this reveals a washer with a pin going through it... there was a few bits of scale in it as well.
It was flushed out, and cleaned up and refitted.

Works perfect now..!

I also have this problem with a Torbeck side feed cistern. It won't shut off even if I manually move the float up and down so I presume that means its got some dirt in it as others experiences (or the washers gone). I don't have much DIY experience but equally don't want to pay a plumber if I can easily try cleaning it myself. Can anyone give me some simple steps on how to do this or does it need an expert?

Without getting to involved in trying to explain the effect of equilibrium on the Torbeck valve ... here's the simple answer. Replace it.
