Roof Lantern v Velux windows.
8 Answers
Can anyone tell me which would be the best option for 'catching the sun' between velux windows and a roof lantern (to replace a tiled roof in a garden room).
Are there any pros or cons regarding the two choices which I should be aware of...I simply want to add more light and warmth to my garden room.
Thank you in advance.

Firstly, do you really mean a 'roof lantern' which is quite an elaborate structure such as this:

Or do you mean a dormer such as this:

I don't think you can compare a lantern to a v

......to a velux. Generally speaking, the more 'solid' roof you remove, the greater will be the heat loss, unless quite expensive structures and glazing are used. Try to find out which is the most feasibe / cost effective first by speaking to a local architect / architectural technician who will be able to advise.
Thank you for trying to assist me...
The Builder: I too originally thought multiple veluxes but have been told to be wary of them as they don't capture as much sunlight as the lanterns.
I'm hoping to get as much sunlight as possible for heat/light as the frontage of the room is shaded by trees. Therefore, would you say that multiple (perhaps 3) veluxes would be enough to warm the room by capturing enough sun?

The Builder: I apologise for not having replied to you ealier...I have been waiting for a quote from the 'velux man' (but he cancelled his appointment twice) anyway he has told me that as my garden room is 15ft x 7 ft he would only be able to add two small velux and one large velux to the roof (due to the shape of the pitch), He suggested I also consider having the roof replaced with a conservatory roof as this would obviously allow more sunlight (therefore more warmth) into the room.
Do you think this would be a better alternatve than the 3 velux windows (I understand that it will make the room very cold in the winter - but it is already very cold in there when its not summer!)
Thanks x
