putting up an outside lamp. The cable I'm using is standard 13a 3 core with brown(live) blue(neutral) and green/yellow(earth)

The cable inside the junction box on the outside wall has a different colour coding. It has a bare wire which I think is earth, a black wire and a red wire.

Which is which?, as my 13a cable has to connect with this junction box

Red = Live
Black = Neutral
Bare = Earth (which I would recommend sleeving with the standard green/yellow sleeve)
EU Harmonized cable colours;

Brown = Live (=Red)
Blue= Neutral (=Black)

thanks all!
Personally I'd say get a spark in to do it, just to be on the safe side!
