I have just cut down to soil level syringa (philadelphus) bushes which I want to get rid of. I love these flowers but have too many in the garden. How do I get rid of the roots? I don't think I have the strength to dig them up but is there another way? i do hope someone can help.

not now you have cut them to soil level. If you cut off all the branches and leave as long a trunk as possible it gives you leverage to get the root out.

Well, when I say soil level I mean to about 3 inches.
bore a few holes in trunk and pour in some diesel or oil

Well, squarebear i wouldn't go to THAT extreme though it would do the job.
murraymints it isn't really a trunk like a tree trunk but lots of stumps.
