Eco-Friendly Home Interest Growing
The interest in owning a house on a carbon-free development is growing, says a green housing official.
More than 2,000 people have expressed their desire to buy an environmentally friendly house claims a company specialising in zero energy development.
If the home insurance industry were to follow the example set by car insurance providers, where drivers of eco-friendly vehicles receive discounted policies, then green home-owners could save money on their house cover in the future.
Still, demand might outnumber supply if other housing developers fail to begin work on green homes.
"[There are] 2,000 people who have, unsolicited, asked to buy one of our zero carbon homes and only a tiny fraction of that demand is actually catered for each year," said a spokesman for the company.
A green home is one that uses sustainable building materials and is designed to be energy efficient, using renewable energy and resource conservation. Most are designed and built by specialist companies. Some eco homes are in pod form where you pick several prefabricated units which are then fitted together. However, those of us with standard homes can put additional features in and around them to help reduce our carbon foot print.
Typical eco improvements you can make to your own home:
• Solar panels – although expensive, grants can be obtained from the government and you should recoup the value within a few years.
• Insulation – both loft and cavity wall insulation will reduce you heating bills and the need for energy use.
• High quality windows – argon filled triple glazing are typically used in eco homes.
• Lower energy light fittings - These can be up to 80% more efficient, reducing electricity consumption and energy bills.
• Using rainwater for toilets. Dual flush toilets can also make a big difference to household water consumption.
• Having a shower rather than a bath.
