AC means alternating current. Alternating current changes its direction of flow through a circuit back and forth continuously. The mains electricity supply is ac.

Yep, lightbulbs use ac, but they have to go @ 50 hertz to make the bulb shine, or else it would be on one second and off the next. Useless info but fun to know. Rich

AC works by fluctuating the power all the way from negative 110 all the way up to positive 110 volts 50 or 60 times every second (60 times for USA, 50 for Europe (that's just how they built it, it didn't "need" to be that way). AC is safer than DC for such high voltages, because DC could melt the wires, but since AC is always moving around, it is said to be safer. AC is able to alternate (or move / fluctuate) because it came from a spinning motor originally or a power station transformer.
