Is this likely to be a gear box problem? - Renault Megane Scenic T Reg

I have a T Reg Renault Megane Scenic. Following a routine visit to Kwik Fit I had some replacement tyres, a new exhaust baffle, and was told that the ‘c’clip had gone on the passenger front side – leaving a lot of grease on the inside of the wheel. They allegedly replaced this.

Two hundred and fifty yards away from the garage I lost drive and couldn’t put the vehicle into any gear. The breakdown guy who picked me up said that he thought it was the clutch. The garage he took me to said that it wasn’t the clutch. They found that the passenger side drive shaft had come out of the mountings and that the bearing at the wheel end wasn’t working smoothly. They replaced it. They also said that the ‘c’ clip had been replaced, wrongly, by a jubilee clip and that there was still a load of grease.

A short journey later and I heard a continuous ratcheting noise from the front passenger to middle of the engine as the car drove. It got less as I accelerated and was louder as I took my foot off the pedal.

I took the car back to the garage who investigated and said that they thought when the drive shaft had come out there may have been some strain and damage to the differential. Maybe a tooth had got broken. I would possibly need a replacement gear box… but in the meantime to continue driving until the problem got worse. The car does drive ok.

My question – is this likely to be a gear box problem? If so is it dangerous to drive the vehicle? Is it likely to seize up? Having spent £640 on the car so far do I cut my losses and get rid of it! A replacement gear box, fitting etc is likely to be in upwards of £500.

Not really ..
The clip should not have been a jubilee clip!
O clip or tywrap maybe.
Sounds more like driveshaft damage to me .. expecially when there is an increase in noise on lock when accelerating or decellerating.
Are you sure Kwik-Fit did not remove the driveshaft?
On most models, the NS shaft has a gaiter and mounting plate held on by three bolts. The shaft can be refitted without being engaged correctly.
