e-mailing photos

Hi I have a new camera and would like to send some photos by e-mail but the attachment size always comes back too large - even when I zip them - since I have old folders that attach easily I am assuming that the new photos are to high a resolution to attach -
my question is ( if I'm right ) ------ how do I lower the resolution (or pixels?) to enable computer viewing (I hope I am using the right jargon) but if not I hope someone knows what I am talking about please help

Do you have Photoshop or similar ?
You can open then re-save pics at a lower resolution there.

Your camera almost certainly came with some software which can do the job for you. The more recent versions of Windows also have a suitable facility built in.

However, here's a piece of (free) software, which deserves a place on everyone's PC:

It's a superb image-viewing program but, if you delve into its options, it can do much more (including what you want to do).

Open an image in Irfanview.
Click on Image > Resize/Resample
Choose a suitable size from the panel on the right. (If the picture is only to be viewed on screen, rather than printed out, 640 x 480 (or, at the most, 800 x 600) is good enough. (Alternatively, choose a suitable percentage figure from the panel on the left).
Click 'OK'
Click File > Save As
Ensure that 'Save as type' is set to 'JPG'
Choose a slightly different file name (e.g. 'SueOnBeachX', instead of 'SueOnBeach')
Click 'Save' and then send the modified file.

I second Chris' suggestion of Irfanview, if you have a load of pictures to resize it has a 'batch' mode as well, once the program is open just hit 'B' and the batch resize option where you can select the photos you want and where the resized version should be put. The 'advanced' options lets you set the size you want, you can pretty well ignore the rest of the advanced stuff.
