caravan for sale on ebay - need help!
24 Answers
Hope someone can help! We're trying to sell our touring caravan, and husband has put it on ebay. Neither of us are ebayers, and we've had a lot of requests for cash on delivery/collection, even though the ad states paypal only (to protect all parties.) The latest request that we've had is to do a payment through paypal, then collect straight away - but how long does a paypal payment take to clear? And is there a limit on amounts through paypal? Confused!

Cash on Collection would be my option of payment - then you won't get clobbered with the fee that Paypal charge - and I am guessing it would be quite a lot if you are selling a caravan.

One 'could' get a 'reversal' if paid by Credit Card through Paypal .. and who are you to know?
If you're selling .. take cash if poss!
Many sellers using Paypal as an option in the listing place a requirement to pay ... say within 3 days of listing ending .. a deposit of at least 10%.
I would offer the above and/or cash.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Never ever use PayPal for collection items. NEVER.
If the buyer says he never received the goods, PayPal will ask you for a tracking number (ie from a courier service or registered post). If you can't provide it, the buyer WILL get his money back.
Cash on delivery only for caravans.

Even more confused now! My train of thought was use Paypal as more secure (rather than accepting a large amount of notes that could be dodgy, and no trail etc.) We had one 'buyer' who paid a cash deposit (£100) and the balance was to be paid into our account prior to delivery (she'd convinced OH not to go through ebay)
Anyway, a few days later she decided that she would only pay cash on delivery - but it just didn't feel right, because she'd completely changed the terms from when she came to view it. She's since demanded her deposit back, and because of that we thought that paypal would be the safest route.......

You could let them come and see it. If they want it, go with them to their bank and wait while they draw the money out. They would have to make arrangements beforehand with their bank to have that amount of money available to them. You could then pop the money into your bank, then back to yours where they collect the caravan. Bit of a pain but at least you know it's all above board and the money is genuine.

I don't care how instant PayPal is.
If the buyer says they haven't received the item and the seller can't provide a tracking number the buyer WILL get a full refund.
Even if the seller can produce signatures, photographs, videos of the transaction....
The seller would have to report it as fraud to the police. Nightmare.

I ebay a LOT and paypal is your and everyone else's worst nightmare- go with good old fashioned pound notes- you can spot forgeries a mile off- I've never got caught once with dodgey notes being given to me in the whole time i've been trading but I have had plenty of nightmares with paypal and as hc says it's completely unsafe if it's a collection item- besides why would you want paypal to gobble up the level of fees that they are going to on a large transaction- do yourself a favour and stop worrying just take the cash.
