You don't. It usually stops by itself and sits there until you turn the power off.

if you are using windows xp, you can just push the power button but dont hold it. if you push the power button the computer will go through the normal shutdown process.

I kind of agree with the question, but I believe that the Windows Start button is a symbol of starting something new! Be it opening an application or finding files or even starting the process of shutting down the PC!
