We have a lot of moss growing on our bungalow roof. How do I get rid of it? Our neighbours have the same bungalow as ours - but their roof is lovely and clean - although they dont clean it or anything.

Why do we have moss - and what should I do about it. Thanks

Here in the U.S. there are several products at the garden store one could use to get rid of the ugly stufff. They products are designed to eliminate moss growing in the lwan but won't harm your roof. It comes in largish bottles that are designed to attach to a hose end (ya'll call it a water pipe, no?)

Then, slip thin strips of copper or zinc under a row of shingles near the top of the roof with about one or two inches showing out the bottom of the shingle. The rain running down the roof will leach tiny elements out of the copper or zinc and prevent further encroachment of the green slime...
If we have any moss on the roof mr j is sent up the ladder and either brushes it off or gently scrapes it away with the side of a trowel. Whatever you do, don't use a pressure washer.
Clanad, we would call it a hose pipe, well I would.
The magpies used to keep our roof in England clear as they were always looking for insects under the moss. They also did a good job of clearing gutters.

You can hire people who will use power washers to blast the roof clean and get rid of any dirt or moss.
Pressure washing 'can' mark the roof .. Depending on the roof covering.
Sandy finish tiles are vulnerable to this.

Scrape it off or spray the whole lot with chemical.
Does moss do any harm? If not why make work for yourself.
Bleach
oh people - never ever use bleach mixes or power washers on roofs!
a couple of folk round here had their roofs power washed last year....the roofs looked soo ugly and marked afterwards. When air pollution was worse (from burning fossil fuel) roofs were less mossy IIRC
Further to Clanad's answer...A traditional UK way to prevent roof moss is to run a bare copper wire along each side of the roof ridge. Rain causes minute amounts of copper sulphate to run down the roof and keep it moss-free. There's also more expensive copper roof ridging that'll do the same job...

Neither of these methods will remove established moss. This has to be done by scraping or brushing, never by using a pressure washer.
