The E111 is no longer in use, midagetrolop. You need to now apply for your EHIC online: https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do
I thought the Canaries were not part of the EU even though they are a part of Spain? Bit like the Isle of Man.
But when on holiday in Europe you still need travel insurance even if you do have a EHIC card.

The EHIC card only covers you for some fairly minor hospital treatment.
To try to clarify what has been written above:

The E111 was abolished years ago. It has been replaced by the the EHIC.

The Canary Islands are Spanish territory, where the EHIC is valid. (It entitles you to the same free, or reduced -rate, treatment which a Spanish citizen would receive).

The confusion about whether the Canary Islands are within the EU or not comes about because of their special tax status. That means that travellers returning from the Canaries are only allowed the 'non-EU' allowances at British customs but, otherwise, Tenerife is just as 'Spanish' as Madrid is.

Sorry, it is the EHIC card that I lost and I thought it was valid for the Canaries ( it was my husband who was doubtful). I have had to ring them to get a replacement, it is all sorted now. Good to prove him wrong for a change !!

midge, as is said, you still need travel insurance though - the EHIC only covers you for basic treatment.

Got it through my bank boxtops - i knew that, but thanks.
Also bear in mind that the EHIC is only valid in public hospitals - as a tourist you can easily land up in a private one without realising it
To digress a little, if you were to send a parcel to Spain you would not need to put a customs declartion on it as Spain is in the Eu. However, if you were to send a parcel to the Canaries you would need to put a customs declaration on it!
