pug 106 1.5d burning vast amounts of oil. Recent cambelt fitted,sailed through mot emmisions. starts and runs well, but has a tendency to cut out after a long run at high speed, when decelerating. Only signs of smoke when accelerating hard

The oil is seeping past them into the compression chambers at higher pressures; when your accelerating hard or at high revs. This will soon happen even at low revs as the rings continue to degrade. To delay it as much as possible keep the revs as low as possible and accelerate slowly. They already need changing though.
